Welcome to my Website

On it you will find information about mybackground and my work, and when I get around to it what I’ve been up to and what I hope to be doing. I hope to add more detailed information about my books and samples of my work.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the earthquake, which devastated Christchurch in February, 2011. For the past eighteen months or so Joanna Preston and I have been gathering material for an anthology of poems responding to the earthquakes and their aftermath in the Canterbury region.

The book is Leaving the Red Zone and it includes nearly 150 poems from 87 poets. It was launched at The Laboratory, Lincoln on Leap Day, 2016.   This was a most appropriate venue as the building - a brew bar established by one of the founders of the Twisted Hop – was constructed and furnished almost entirely from salvage from the earthquakes and it was also where Jo and I conducted much of our editorial work and planning. It is a handsome larger format book, beautifully put together by Glyn Strange and Clerestory Press. We are very proud of it and to have been involved in its making.

The Pirates and the Nightmaker has now been out for a year and has had excellent reviews and also was a finalist in the junior fiction category of the New Zealand Children’s Book Awards in 2015, having sneaked into the reckoning because of the March publication date.

I have posted the cover and some information about it on the Publications Fantasy Page. The it tells the story of the original Loblolly Boy and is set in the Spanish Main and Caribbean Sea during the War of Jenkin's Ear in 1740.

Felix and the Red Rats (Longacre/Random) has been out for some time now and I'm delighted that it made the Storylines Notable Book List and has been shortlisted for the NZ Post  Book Awards for Children and Young Adults  and also shortlisted for the LIANZA Esther Glen Medal.

The poetry anthology from Random House Essential New Zealand Poems: Facing the Empty Page which I edited with Siobhan Harvey and Harry Ricketts has been very well received and has spent six months on the NZ Best Seller List. Astonishing for a book of poetry. The design and feel of the book of course was utterly lovely.

I have also posted a cutaway of the wonderful Jenny Cooper design for my CSYW collection Packing A Bag For Mars in the publications poetry section.

I have posted the cover for my new collection of poetry Shadow Play from Proverse and information about the book and its contents. Shadow Play. While in Dunedin as the Children's Writer in Residence at the College of Education, I recorded the entire collection  a cd of the poems comes with the book.

All best
